Earth Day for Kids: How to Celebrate

We get pretty excited about Earth Day around here at Wild Interiors (P.S. It’s coming up on April 22nd). What’s not to love about a holiday that celebrates this beautiful world we live in and promotes the protection and preservation of its natural beauty and resources. This year we thought, what better way to celebrate the planet's environment than by educating and exciting the younger generations about the importance and joy of working with plants! Plants are so important to the Earth’s environment and making a big deal about Earth Day for kids helps to signify how truly important it is for current and future generations to take care of the planet we live on.

We partnered with several classrooms in surrounding local communities for a special Earth Day: Watch Me Grow Plant activity. Each participating classroom received a kit with supplies for all students to plant a baby spider plant into their own pot. Kids will get to decorate their pots and through a series of video lesson plans, learn about plants and how to take care of them. They will learn how to water and care for their plants and measure their growth over time. We were also excited to share several free Earth Day: Watch Me Grow Activity Kits with Wild Interiors followers so they can enjoy at home.

So how can you get the young ones in your life interested in Earth Day and caring about the environment and how important plants are to it? Let’s talk about it!

Plants are really important to the planet and to all living things. Plants help us breathe by creating oxygen. Plants provide us food. Vegetables are plants and fruit, beans, seeds and nuts also come from plants. Plants like trees create shade for us and shelter for animals. We also use the wood from trees to build our homes. Plants are so important to the Earth and it is important that we learn about them.

There are easy ways for kids to help take care of the Earth on Earth Day and every day.  Teach them how to reduce, reuse, and recycle - cut down on what they throw away. Volunteer with them to help clean up a neighborhood park. Show them how to conserve water by shutting off the faucet while you brush your teeth or take a shorter shower. You can also give back to the Earth by planting a tree.
