Earth Day at Wild Interiors

Every year on April 22nd, we unify to celebrate the birth of an environmental movement, Earth Day! According to earthday.org, “more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.” We get pretty excited about Earth Day around here. What’s not to love about a holiday that celebrates this beautiful world we live in and promotes the protection and preservation of its natural beauty and resources. This year, we wanted to share all of the ways that we’re celebrating Earth Day at Wild Interiors.

Plants for Kids

What better way to celebrate the planet's environment than by educating and exciting the younger generations about the importance and joy of working with plants! Plants are so important to the Earth’s environment and making a big deal about Earth Day for kids helps to signify how truly important it is for current and future generations to take care of the planet we live on.

We partnered with several classrooms in surrounding local communities for a special Earth Day Watch Me Grow Plant activity. Each participating classroom received a kit with supplies for all students to plant a baby spider plant into their own pot. Kids will get to decorate their pots and through a series of video lesson plans, learn about plants and how to take care of them. They will learn how to water and care for their plants and measure their growth over time.

Our Actions Towards a Healthier Planet

Sustainable practices are a top priority at Wild Interiors. We are driven by the desire to grow exceptional and enduring plants while taking steps towards a healthier planet. Wild Interiors has invested time and money into more sustainable and long-term solutions. We believe every effort towards a better environment, no matter how big or small, is crucial in keeping our planet healthy!

Our Sustainable Practices

Wild Interiors has worked to become an industry leader in environmentally sustainable greenhouse practices. We have been independently certified by MPS, a sustainability certifier in the horticulture industry that tracks on the basis of usage and output in the areas of energy, water, and waste. Having this certification is important to make quality and sustainability transparent, measurable and verifiable. In the most recent years, our greenhouses have consistently received “A” ratings, which are among the highest possible!

Heating

Our greenhouses are heated exclusively by wood-fueled furnaces. This means that all of our “fuel” comes from local tree clearing services and wooden pallet disposal. With the use of wood boilers as our heating source, we have been able to reduce the amount of emissions produced by natural gas and oil fuel by 90%! The use of high-efficiency energy curtains, radiant heat, and high-efficiency lights throughout our facility has helped reduce our fuel energy consumption by 50%.

Watering

When you have 100 acres of indoor growing space, there are A LOT of plants to keep happy and hydrated. Retention ponds and holding tanks surrounding our facilities collect and filter rainwater in a 100% sustainable irrigation system for all of our plants. These ponds collect about 1.5 million gallons for every one inch of rainfall!

The water supply at Wild Interiors is not only 100% sustainable but also completely self-contained. After rainwater is collected and distributed for watering plants, it is returned back to holding tanks where it can be filtered and reused. This ensures that significant amounts of wastewater do not enter the local water supply and negatively affect natural habitat. Learn more about our greenhouse watering methods here.

Every Step Counts

Whether they are big initiatives or small steps, every little bit of help for our environment takes us in the right direction. At Wild Interiors, we’re committed to building a future that is more environmentally sound and compliant with regional, national, and global climate change initiatives. We will continue to strive to be an industry leader in every possible way, aligning us with our mission, vision, and strategy to “continue the legacy of running a sustainable company for future generations.”
