The Best Indoor Plants for the Kitchen

The kitchen is often considered the heart of many homes. It is the place where meals are prepared and shared, homework is completed, and late-night chats with a snack are served. The kitchen table or counter may even have become a home office or virtual learning space in recent times. This room in most of our homes means comfort and functionality.

Since we spend so much time in this main hub of the home, how can we make it even more comfortable and livable? Including kitchen plants in your home can make the space an even more inviting place to be. Plants have a calming effect and can help improve your mood, have been known to increase productivity and can even purify the air in our home. Who wouldn’t want the added benefits of plants around them as they prepare and enjoy home meals?

So it’s not really a question of whether or not to include plants in your kitchen but the question of what plants? When choosing the best indoor plants for your kitchen it’s important to take into consideration the aesthetic of the space and the care of the plants you choose. Choose plants that visually fit into your space and compliment your current decor and available decorating area. Also, think about the lighting and temperature conditions in the room and make sure they are aligned with the plants you choose.

Best Kitchen Plants for Your Home

Pothos

Pothos are one of the most popular houseplants due to their easy-going nature and attractive trailing foliage. If counter space is a little more limited in your kitchen, indoor hanging plants like pothos are a great option! Hang from a kitchen window or place atop a high standing cabinet. There are different varieties of pothos with varying leaf size and color, but all produce beautiful vines. They have easy care requirements and grow well in different light levels and only require watering around once a week.

ZZ Plant

The Zamioculcas zamiifolia or ZZ plant is perfect for those who may not be experienced plant owners but want to enjoy a striking plant in their kitchen. This eye-catching plant would look lovely tucked in a corner of the counter or standing stately on a kitchen island. Just make sure this plant is kept out of reach of pets and children due to its toxicity to humans and animals. The ZZ plant does well in differing light levels and requires very little watering. Aloe Vera

When you think of aloe vera, you may be thinking of that life-saving relief from your last sunburn. But the aloe vera plant is also a smart addition to your kitchen. Not only is it a striking succulent plant to look at, it also is great to have on hand after an inevitable kitchen burn. For cooling relief, cut a lower leaf off of the plant and split lengthwise to access the gel interior that can be applied directly on a burn. Aloe vera likes bright, indirect light and only needs watered every few weeks.

Herbs

Herbs seem like a no-brainer to include in your kitchen. Not only can they add to your decor but you can add them to your favorite cooked dishes! Line potted herb plants along a sunny windowsill or tuck a variety in a countertop planter centerpiece. Pay attention to the light and care requirements for your selected herbs when choosing a place to display them.

Succulents

If you’re looking for cheerful additions to your kitchen that require little more care than a sunny spot to sit, think succulents as the perfect kitchen window plants! These low maintenance cuties will love basking away in a sunny space and are perfect for the busiest of kitchens because they require such minimal care. Water only when succulent plants have dried completely between waterings.

If the kitchen isn’t already your favorite place in your home, adding these appealing kitchen plants might just put it over the edge!
